Phillies Release Whit Merrifield
Kansas City Shortstop Restructures Contract
Philadelphia Phillies have released veteran utility man
The Philadelphia Phillies have released utility man Whit Merrifield, the team announced Friday afternoon. Merrifield, who signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Phillies in January, had been designated for assignment earlier this week.
Merrifield, 35, was a three-time All-Star with the Kansas City Royals and was seen as a veteran presence for the Phillies. However, he struggled at the plate this season, batting just .218 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 59 games.
The Phillies are expected to replace Merrifield with Nick Maton, who has been playing well in Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Maton, 24, is a versatile player who can play both middle infield positions and the outfield.
