What is Dojo Etiquette
Every Karate organization has its own unique culture and customs. But they all share a common thread: dojo etiquette. Dojo etiquette is a set of rules that govern behavior in the dojo. It is based on the principles of respect, humility, and discipline.
Karate Etiquette
The following are some of the most important rules of karate etiquette:
- Be punctual for class.
- Bow to the instructor and other students when entering and leaving the dojo.
- Do not talk or make noise during class.
- Listen to the instructor and follow their instructions carefully.
- Respect your fellow students.
- Do not use profanity or other offensive language.
- Do not fight or spar outside of class.
- Wear a clean gi and belt to class.
- Keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed.
- Do not wear jewelry or other accessories that could be dangerous.
- Do not chew gum or eat in the dojo.
Kneeling Seiza
Seiza is a kneeling position that is used in many martial arts. It is a respectful way to sit and listen to the instructor. To kneel in seiza, follow these steps:
- Kneel on the floor with your knees hip-width apart and your toes pointed forward.
- Sit back on your heels with your buttocks resting on your calves.
- Keep your back straight and your hands resting on your thighs.
Bowing In Seiza
Bowing is a way to show respect to the instructor and other students. To bow in seiza, follow these steps:
- From seiza, place your hands on your thighs with your palms down.
- Slowly lower your head until your forehead touches the floor.
- Hold the bow for a few seconds, then slowly raise your head.
Kneeling Bow
A kneeling bow is a more formal bow than a bow in seiza. It is used to show great respect. To perform a kneeling bow, follow these steps:
- Kneel on the floor with your knees together and your toes pointed forward.
- Sit back on your heels with your buttocks resting on your calves.
- Place your hands on your thighs with your palms down.
- Slowly lower your head until your forehead touches the floor.
- Hold the bow for a few seconds, then slowly raise your head.
- Stand up by placing your hands on the floor and pushing yourself up.
Entering And Exiting The Dojo
When entering the dojo, bow to the instructor and other students. Remove your shoes and place them in the designated area. When leaving the dojo, bow to the instructor and other students. Put on your shoes and leave the dojo quietly.
By following these rules of dojo etiquette, you will show respect for your instructor and fellow students. You will also create a positive and safe learning environment.
